Start with the ground conditions
Establishing a lawn is more than spreading topsoil and sowing seed. A practical order is: check the starting point, shape and level the ground, spread the growing layer, finish the surface, sow and water from the start. First consider where water goes, what the existing soil is like and how the lawn will be used. Good ground preparation helps reduce later settlement, puddles and uneven growth.
Key idea: the amount of lawn material depends on both the area and the depth of the growing layer. Area alone does not tell you how much topsoil is needed.
1. Check the starting point
Look at the area in different weather if you can. Note slopes from buildings and hard surfaces, rainwater flow, shade and any places where water stands. Heavy clay, stony ground and a wet hollow may need a different approach from dry, sandy soil.
Remove old growth, perennial weeds, roots and large stones. A sound existing lawn may sometimes be renovated or used as part of the solution, but thick, uneven plant debris should not be left beneath a new lawn.
2. Prepare the ground and level the surface
Shape the ground so water can move in a controlled way and does not collect against buildings. If needed, improve the structure with suitable soil or aggregate, taking the ground type, drainage and intended use into account.
Compact new fill in a measured way and allow the ground to settle where there is a lot of new material. Avoid working soil when it is too wet, because wet soil compacts easily and can become hard and uneven.
Topsoil for a lawn
The lawn needs an even growing layer that supports rooting. Its depth depends on the existing ground, growing conditions and the lawn you want. Around 15–20 cm can be a starting point in many gardens, but it is not a universal rule. Check the supplier's guidance and the conditions at the site.
3. Spread topsoil and create the finished surface
Spread the growing layer evenly and remove stones, roots and clods from the surface. Level it in several light passes so the surface does not settle unexpectedly later. Light watering before sowing can reveal hollows, but the surface should not become muddy.
Topsoil quantity: area × growing-layer depth = volume.
Example for 100 m²: 100 m² × 0.15 m = 15 m³ of growing medium, or 15,000 litres. Fifteen centimetres is an example, not a universal depth. When estimating the order, consider the supplier's stated volume, possible settling and the allowance needed to finish the surface.
4. Sow and water from the start
Choose a seed mix for the intended use and growing conditions. Sow according to the product instructions, using crossing directions if advised so the coverage is even. Press the seed lightly into the surface rather than burying it too deeply.
Keep the surface evenly moist after sowing. Early watering usually means small, repeated applications adjusted to the weather, not leaving the area waterlogged. As the seedlings strengthen, watering can be less frequent and deeper.
Common mistakes and checks
- The growing-layer depth varies greatly across the area.
- The surface is not level before sowing, so hollows appear later.
- Wet soil is compacted too hard.
- Water flow beside buildings has not been checked.
- The surface dries out after sowing, or watering washes the seed away.
Before you finish, check that the surface is even, water moves as intended and the topsoil and seed quantities are based on actual measurements.
